Pocklington 3rds sponsored by Stamfords hosted Church Fenton 2nds at Burnby Lane on Saturday and after winning the toss skipper Wes Smith chose to have a bowl on a green looking surface.
Pocklington’s openers bowled nicely with little reward with young Sam Thompson making his first appearance for the 3’s this season.
However the away side started very well, going at a run ball in the early overs.
Adam Tolley (2-58) coming on at first change immediately made the breakthrough with Matt Smith (2-35) bowling well to remove the rest of the visitors top order.
Church Fentons line up continued to deliver throughout their allotment, displaying a well seasoned depth.
Skipper Wes Smith (4-40) managed to amble in and bowl some liquorice allsorts off a short run in the final overs and snaffle 4 late wickets with the help of some fantastic outfield catching but Pock could only restrict the visitors to a very respectable run a ball total of 238/7.
After an impressive tea Pock set to their task. Apie Pieterse (35) went out with attacking intent, dispatching anything short with disdain. Max Wilson (15) also came and offered firm resistance to what was a very accurate bowling attack.
Adam Tolley showed his class mid innings with a superb 38 off just 35 balls, coupled with a typical Ashby performance smashing 25 off just 13 balls including 2 sixes.
However, Pocklington couldn’t quite get a grip of the chase, losing wickets regularly throughout their innings and eventually losing out by 104 runs.
An enjoyable day was still had by all, win or lose, Pock always come together, heading over to watch the 2’s game on the main pitch followed by post game discussions among what has become extended family.
With plenty of positives to take, Pock go into a double header this weekend taking on league leaders Drax followed by Ben Johnson at home on Monday.
