Chaplins see 2nds to Home win over Ledsham

Pocklington Cricket Club

Can we hold our bats the right way? Yes we can

Pocklington 2nds sponsored by Stamfords hosted Ledsham on Saturday at Burnby Lane and were looking for a much improved performance from their reverse fixture earlier in the season which saw the team bowled out for 11. The visitors were in a confident mood with talk of putting Pock into bat again and questioning via socials if we could hold our bats the right way round.

After losing another toss the 2nds were unsurprisingly asked to field first on another baking hot day and after a good start with the ball the visitors were 54-3, from here they pushed on thanks to a half century from captain Kelly (73) and some useful middle order runs including a blistering 14 ball knock from Rothera (30). Consistent bowling however meant Ledsham finished on 248-5, a good score which was rightly celebrated by their opponents, however Pock knew if they batted well they were still 20-30 short. Ted Donkin (5-69) was the chief architect with the ball as he got his name on the 2026 honours board with a five wicket haul, Nathan Saltmer (2-59) and Alex Ashby (1-22) with the other wickets.

The Pock reply started solidly reaching 25 before captain Ian Scott (14) was caught, Neal Jackson (4) then soon followed which brought Saltmer (17) to the crease, he helped move the scoring on but was next out also caught with the score now 76-3. John Chaplin (92*) who had opened then put together a needed partnership with Dan Croft (38) and Chaplin passed his half century as the pair moved the score onto 156 before Croft was caught just after the second drinks break. Donkin (23) was next in and scored well with Chaplin moving the score on to 213 before Donkin was caught at third man. This proved to be the last wicket to fall though as the run chase picked up pace as Lewis Chaplin (30*) joined his dad at the crease and the pair played fluently together with Lewis hitting seven boundaries in his short innings to help ease the team home to a five wicket win.

As it turns out, the team did know which end of their bats to use as they as they picked up an impressive win to claim all ten points against their visitors on what was yet another superb pitch provided by Neal Jackson. Next week the team are back on the road and are making a short away trip to face Wheldrake.
