Pocklington 2nds hosted Scholes this weekend and were asked to field first after losing the toss. Pock got off to a good start and had the visitors 46-4 and then 104-5, the visitors recovered from here though as they posted 241 when bowled out in the 42nd over. Lewis Chaplin (2-48), Will Foley (2-45), Ted Donkin (1-36), Max Wilson (1-24) and Freddie Hara (4-37) with the wickets.
Pock got off to a great start in reply and reached 78 without loss before Josh Tanikal (24) was caught, from here Pock slumped to 85-4 as Ian Scott (52) followed not long after reaching a half century with a nasty finger injury, Neal Jackson (1), and Dan Croft (4) all followed. Ted Donkin (55) made the most of a reprieve when dropped on none to hit a half century of his own as he led the fightback before he too was then caught as Pock went from 151-4 to 164-9. It all looked to be over as wickets fell around Matt Atkinson (51) but he played a blistering innings alongside Freddie Hara (7*) who was batting well at the other end to suddenly give the team a chance of winning after passing the 90% mark when reaching 217.
Here is where the controversy started however as Scholes who evidently felt they had the game wrapped up at 164-9 were in panic mode with 24 needed from 15 balls and Atkinson hitting the ball to all corners decided their only out was to mankad (run out) Atkinson. Scholes were given the option by the umpire to rescind their appeal and offer a warning, as we know is usually customary and in keeping with the spirit of the game, however they quite promptly and aggressively made it clear that the game was over, no warning would be given and they were claiming the victory.
We all know it is in the rules, however we all know it is against the spirit of the game and you rarely see this at a professional level let alone in amateur level division two cricket. It was a sad ending to what could have been a great finish, whatever the result, but unfortunately Scholes did not want to find out and took the easy way out.
We move onto next week as we travel to Sherburn Eversley and look forward to playing teams more in line with the values of the game.
