Pocklington 2nds sponsored by Stamfords hosted Fairburn 2nds at Burnby Lane on Saturday and after winning the toss skipper Ian Scott chose to have a bowl.
Fairburn started the innings well but never really got away thanks to a brilliant opening spell from Freddie Forman (2-24) and Riley Tinson who was unlucky not to get a wicket. Geoff Woodward (2-58) continued to roll back the years with another 12 over spell which included a superb one handed caught and bowled, a spell described as mesmerizing said one Fairburn player! Ted Donkin (2-46) bowled alongside him in the middle overs and kept things tight with a mixture of seam and spin picking up wickets at crucial times. Dan Croft (1-10) bowling for the first league game in three years picked up a wicket with his first ball before Forman returned to pick up another wicket in the last over as Fairburn finished on 194-7, a score the team knew was below par but wouldn't be easy to chase nonetheless against a strong Fairburn side.
Things started well initially reaching 39 without loss before Martin Stables (9) was run out, James Foley (2) was bowled and the Scott (27) was caught. From here wickets began to tumble at regular intervals as a real partnership of meaning did not materialize with only James Saltmer (45) showing the innings that was required. After Saltmer was caught late on the tail failed to reach the final overs and left Donkin (8*) stranded 29 runs short of the target. Two points were still added to the total though in defeat and the team now looks forward to a double header next weekend when travelling to Hillam & Monk Fryston on Saturday before hosting Hundill Hall on bank holiday Monday.
