Pocklington Cricket Club

Four wicket home defeat

Pocklington 1sts sponsored by Stamfords finished their season off on Saturday with a home game against Osbaldwick who were needing a win to secure the Championship Central title and after losing the toss Pock were asked to bat first.

Pock got off to a good start with Martin Stables (63) finding early boundaries alongside Dan Littlewood (10), the former was the first wicket to fall however which brought Dave Chaplin (30) to the crease who batted well alongside Stables moving the score onto 106 before Stables was the second to fall LWB, Chaplin then soon followed which saw the score at 122-3. Harry Snelling (34) and Cameron Mitchell (39) then rebuilt and moved the score onto 186 with a good partnership but were unable to convert their starts as bough fell in quick succession. From 186-3 Pock saw a big collapse in the final ten overs which meant they failed to capitalize on their good position as they were bowled out for 214 in the 45th over knowing they left themselves at least 50 short of where they needed to be, skipper Joel Taylor (12) the only other batter to reach double figures.

After the final and yet another delicious tea provided by The Wolds Cafe & Coffee House Pock set about trying to take early wickets. Osbaldwick started well but did lose two early wickets however rebuilt from 42-2 to push on to 138 before their star man Sonter (65) was caught by Freddie Forman off the bowling of Dave Chaplin (2-32) who rounded his season off with another two wickets to make it a terrific personal campaign by hitting the 40 mark. Pock made further inroads with Forman (3-44) getting another wicket and Will Atkinson (1-31). The sixth proved to be the last one though as Osbaldwick overcame some nerves to see the game home and claim a four wicket win and a well deserved Championship title in the 41st over, congratulations to the visitors and best of luck next season in the Premier Division 2.

Six wickets for Pock did mean another two points added to the league total which saw the 1sts finish their Championship Central season in a 9th place finish. With the league restructure in 2027 there was no relegation this summer but the 1sts would have survived in any case after finishing outside the normal drop zone with bonus points showing their value in the final league standings.

Well done to skipper Joel Taylor who was captaining the side for the first time this year, we look forward to seeing the team come back stronger in 2027 and we look forward to celebrating the season and all the team and clubs successes at the end of season dinner in a few weeks time, see you there!
