Pocklington 1st XI sponsored by Stamfords kicked off their league campaign with a home match against Selby and after losing the toss were invited to bat first by the visitors which proved to be a good decision with early wickets of Littlewood (0) and John Chaplin (4) putting the 1sts 7-2. Andy Anderson (10) on return offered some resistance along with Nathan Saltmer (16) but after England International Neal Jackson (0) fell to a first ball lbw Pock were not 59-5. Cameron Mitchell (46) was top scored for Pock and played well before being caught just short his half century, captain Joel Taylor (26), Alex Downey (33) and Connaire Brattan (14) added valuable late runs before they were eventually bowled out for 166.
With a score below par on what is always a great batting track the firsts would need to bowl well to stand any chance in this one and despite some early wickets and two quality catches by Downey including a caught and bowled (1-31) Selby were still well placed at 65-3. The returning Dave Chaplin was already into his stride by this point though having claimed the Selby skipper Hoyle (16) and no. 4 Bugg (5) and he only kicked on from here with a superb display of bowling to help spin Selby out for 96 to give the 1sts an opening day win and all ten points as Chaplin finished with 7-29, supported as well by Anderson who took 2-19 on his first start since 2021.
Thanks to all our player sponsors and to our shirt sponsors Stamfords as well as Laveracks for the navis breakfast. It was great to see so many new and returning faces at Burnby Lane enjoying the new seating area and supporting the team. The 1sts are back in action this Saturday at home and host Acomb 2nds.
