2nds fall short in first game

The 2nds sponsored by A&M Removals of Pocklington got their season underway with a home game at Burnby Lane against Burn 1sts. After winning the toss Pock skipper Dan Croft invited the hosts to bat first.

An early breakthrough was made in the 12th over after dropped catch resulted in a run out thanks to quick thinking from Jon Latham and Martin Stables. Both Geoff Woodward and Lewis Chaplin bowled well in the opening period without a wicket but kept the scoring to a minimum. After moving the scoring on, opener Haigh (54) had no sooner made a century than he was caught after the introduction of Latham (1-34) who claimed his wicket with his first ball of the season thanks to a brilliant catch by Archie Sumner in the deep. Sumner also bowled well without reward, but fellow junior Freddie Forman (1-32) did get his name on the board after a brilliant swinging delivery on second team debut bowled Cruise (8) with the score 111-3. Only one more wicket fell however as Steward (58) hit a patient half century before Chaplin (1-40) got him in his second spell. Clark (68) also hit a 50 as Burn finished on 233-4.

Pock started well in reply and moved to 52 without loss before Stables (30) was bowled. The wickets of James Foley (19) and Forman (2) quickly followed. Croft (30) offered some resistance in the middle order but Pock struggled to get close to their target in the end finishing on 111-8. Juniors Josh Stables (8*) and Sumner (5*) played some good shots though and were unlucky not to add more to the total.

A defeat first up but plenty of positives to take from the game. Thanks to Laveracks at Pocklington for a wonderful tea, thanks to Neal Jackson for his brilliant efforts on the square to prepare such a great pitch given recent conditions as well as Simon Hill for his work on the outfield. Next week the 2s are hosting Castleford 2s on Sunday at Burnby Lane.
